...or not.

The Candidate

Jim Dyke is our local asinine political cartoonist for our local, inane, daily rag that is the Jefferson City News Tribune Link. He passes off uninspired doodles that are quite easily seen as biased, but the real crime of his 'work' is that it always manages to be unfunny, instead of cleverly hilarious. I don't care what side you snipe from or if you snipe at both sides (preferably Bloom County style), just as long as you're clever at doing such, I'll chuckle instead of groan.

The most recent bit of work thrust upon the poor joyless Jefferson City paper readers is a swipe at Hillary Clinton announcing that she's 'In to Win!' (a bit too close to Pat Schroeder's She Wins, We Win campaign slogan for my comfort). In the limp art, Hillary is trumpeting her announcement whilst a scared witless voter cowers behind her with the label 'Americans' holding a list of reasons why 'Americans' may be scared to hear of Hillary's candidacy.

Billary

The list includes, curiously, Hillary's failed health care plan she attempted to propose in '94 when hubby Bill was in office and the Jennifer Flowers and Whitewater scandals. I say this list is curious as though I saw the Whitewater scandal as a major ethical concern (I dislike corruption), I couldn't find anyone who was concerned about B.C.'s b.j. or his other (probably many) extra-marital affairs and Hillary's only crime there was staying by the side of some jackass who mistreated her. I say this in ignorance - I'm not married, let alone to Mrs. H-to-the-R-nizzle-C, so I can't say how appropriate or out of what necessity the infidelities were. However, I don't care to have them occur in our White House. My concerns fell on deaf ears to all in the populace around me, however. Most people just don't seem to care about such moral slights.

Presidential spouses writing legislative proposals backed by the Oval office, however is a major concern for me. Though Hillary's Universal 'Cradle to Grave' health care plan continues to look more and more tempting as prices continually balloon I don't appreciate an unelected official so close to an elected official proposing grand plans. That's a dangerous precedent to create.

However, every Presidential spouse in recent years has had some sort of pet project. Mrs. Bush's seems to be libraries and reading, Mrs. Reagan's seemed to be 'Just Say No!' replete with an appearance on Different Strokes( what'choo talkin' 'bout Mrs. Reagan?) the list goes on and on, so perhaps Hillary gets some slack in that department.

Back to Mr. Dyke, his cartoon is far from accurate. 'Americans' aren't scared to hear of RHC's announcement. Democrats and Conservatives are.

'Conservatives' (that term is being used quite loosely) are still so tangled up in their attempt to wind up the public that Mrs. Clinton is an anti-family butch broad with a pair of her own that they managed to brainwash themselves in to believing Hillary the second anti-christ. The truth is she grew up a devout Methodist that was highly active in her church group, a girl scout, a National Honor Society member (our High School NHS members picked up trash on the school grounds), a devoted wife who allowed her husband to trample her dignity in the public forum, and one who did her best Betty Crocker impersonation baking cookies on the cover of magazines during Bill's tenure. She also had the White House kitchen remodeled so that she could 'properly' bake dinners for Chelsea and distinguished guests.

Democrats are the ones who should be afraid. Molly Ivins (highly intelligent acid tongued progressive) recently warned Dem's of Hillary's actual politics; including a failure to provide progressive leadership on what should be easy softballs for any democrat;

What kind of courage does it take, for mercy's sake? The majority of the American people (55 percent) think the war in Iraq is a mistake and that we should get out. The majority (65 percent) of the American people want single-payer health care and are willing to pay more taxes to get it. The majority (86 percent) of the American people favor raising the minimum wage. The majority of the American people (60 percent) favor repealing Bush's tax cuts, or at least those that go only to the rich. The majority (66 percent) wants to reduce the deficit not by cutting domestic spending, but by reducing Pentagon spending or raising taxes.

The majority (77 percent) thinks we should do "whatever it takes" to protect the environment. The majority (87 percent) thinks big oil companies are gouging consumers and would support a windfall profits tax. That is the center, you fools. WHO ARE YOU AFRAID OF?
- Ms. Ivins

There is the aforementioned anti-Hillary bloc that will not vote for her no matter what that continually represents that 20% of all voters who blindly ascribe to anything Mr. Limbaugh or Mr. Hannity would push. Combine that with a good number of men and women who will simply not vote a woman in to the highest office in the land as they simply don't perceive that as a woman's place and you've got a hefty number of votes against an otherwise very smart and very able candidate who;

Hillary, back when she was hot

Graduated from High School with Honours, made very high marks at Wellesly, graduated from Yale with higher marks then her husband, assisted in the Watergate hearings, ran a succesful law firm, and carpetbagged her way in to Senatorship. Impressive indeed.

One of the biggest problems with Hillary is she and her husband's near Republicanism - shining brilliant light on the lack of actual choice under our two-party system.

Who said this on September 12, 2001? George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, or Hillary Clinton?

1."[we should] make it very clear that not only those who harbor terrorists but those who in any way give any aid or comfort whatsoever wil now face the wrath of our country. You are either with America in our time of need or you are not."

Who said this?

2."We will tolerate no bashing of Mexico or immigrants. Candidates who bash immigrants will be asked to pay the price."

Who said this?

3.I was struck by the rigor of [President Nixon's] analysis and the wisdom of his suggestions. President Nixon believed deeply that the United States cannot be strong at home unless we lead abroad.

The answers are 1. HRC, 2. GWB, and 3. WJC, respectively.

Hillary did impress me today with her intelligent political maneuvering putting the onus of Iraq on Mr. Bush.

"This was his decision to go to war with an ill-conceived plan and an incompetently executed strategy," the Democratic senator from New York said her in initial presidential campaign swing through Iowa.

"We expect him to extricate our country from this before he leaves office" in January 2009, the former first lady said.

Like her or not, support her or not, that was a damn smart move.

Will we see more smart moves from Hillary, or will she do her best to be Republican-lite? Only time will tell, but in Deference's eyes, her hold on a successful run for the Presidency is a tightrope walk towards oblivion or salvation.

It's a no-win situation, I'm afraid. What it takes to win the Dem primaries will make her a flip-flopper a la Kerry in the main election. Bill has been ceaselessly involved in international politics since he left office, as well. I just wonder how many times he's offered the idea that he'll be able to get things done once the little woman is in the big chair.

The whole idea presented to us in the nineties that 'Presidents come in pairs' is indeed wrong. Who would be Hillary's running mate, I wonder, if she won the democratic primary (and I think she's in serious danger of doing so) to Democratic demise?

I don't think the whole flip-flopping, waffling issue is going to be as much of a stinger this next presidential election - some tired propaganda does run it's course and will find itself out of place in time - not in accordance with 'new rules'. The McCain offensive won't have the same political savvy of the Cheney / Bush junta or infrastructure (let's hope!). It may not even require it to win, but it will be up to Clinton&Co to redefine the language via 'smart moves'.

Thanks for stopping by.

Hillary, back when she was hot

And wow, she really was. Shocking.
on Jan 29, 2007
Ah, San Chonino, one of my favorites, next to Kingbee. And, yes, shocking.

The latest polls I saw put her negative numbers at like 48% with only about 3% undecided about her.  which means she has peaked.

And the primary difference between Libraries and "Just say no" and Hillary Care is that the former 2 were not going to impact every american's life in a mandatory way.  The latter was.  As you said, not even those who would support a program like Hillary Care want a program forced on them by an unelected meglomaniac.

That's an easy conclusion to arrive at, but the voting public have this problem with changing their mind with time and circumstance. Two great examples are staring us in the face now. The health care proposal seemed a bit of a frivolous benefit in the roaring nineties when Baby Boomers were still relatively young and healthcare costs were much lower. Now that most boomers' bodies are beginning to fall apart and health care costs are skyrocketing, people have begun to change their minds on universal health care. People have changed their minds regarding Iraq - something which had majority support, but that conflict over a period of five years has made a Majority the new Minority. Hillary might be flexible enough to overcome the anti-sentiment against her and adapt to political changes in this country, but we'll just have to see - we do have quite a few months to go...

That's a good point, and one reason why Hillary only gets "a little slack" - not a free pass.

I was going to come and make my political weigh-in, but I'm still floored at the fact that Hillary was that hot once upon a time.

I got stuck drooling halfway through the article.

Hopefully, my weighing in will come soon.

Take your time, S.C., (Def. rule #2; Time Invites Insight).

Would any of the ladies here at JU weigh in their opinions?

LW?

Dharmagirl?

TexasWahine?

Please provide we Gentleman, the minority, your opinion. Please. I bring flowers amidst olive branches.

It doesn't have to be good, just real.

Come the fuck on! Women, get your mouths together and tell us what's up. Are you really just going to let less then half the population tell you what is going on? The less than half that rarely speaks?

She was also a Republican when she was hot.. - Bakerstreet

I see her as a Republican now, please enlighten, I'm sure you've got a gem for us.

Fuck partisanship, some voters care for Truth.

She was a republican early in college. No joke. Later she started wearing the homely girl hair and the hornrimmed glasses was around the time she turned Dem, if I recall.

From her bio:

"Hillary Rodham took her parents advice and pursued an academic career. Her undergraduate studies took place at Wellesley College for women in Wellesley, Massachusetts. This is the college where another famous female politician, Madeleine Albright, graduated in 1959. Hillary Rodham had always been interested in politics, and now she took an active role in the school government. For a time she served as President of the College Republicans. She was deeply affected by the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. She had met him in person when her youth minister, the Reverend Don Jones, brought her to hear King preach in 1962. Encouraged by Professor Alan Schechter, Hillary Rodham attended the Wellesley in Washington program and before long she became a dedicated Democrat."

Sweetness is achieved.

Thank you, Bakerstreet, for the homework. This doesn't betray Hillary the candidate any more then it provides a much more accurate picture of who she is. I'm very thankful for this tidbit, as I've little time...

Good shtuff. Many bow-down thanks to 'The Bakerstreet'.
